The Cottage was built in 1902...certainly it's old enough to have collected a few ghosts!
Occasionally, odd things happen. The Cottage has what I term, restless days and/or nights. Just a few days ago was one such restless day. I was in the kitchen washing dishes when I clearly heard someone bang on the front door.
Karma Cat, who is still convalescing from an injury heard the sound, too. My dog, Shadow, napping nearby didn't. She is ten years old and getting a bit hard of hearing.
I dried my hands and went to see who was at the door. No one. No car. Nothing. Weird. Later that day I distinctly heard someone walk through the dressing room which adjoins the kitchen where I was busy canning some tomatoes.
Presently, I live alone at the Cottage and all that day strange sounds were heard throughout. "Restless" days and nights occur three or four times a year. Most of the time all is quiet and peaceful.
Generally, the Cottage is one of the quietest homes I've ever lived in. There are very few creaks and other settling sounds. I suppose that over the past century the Cottage has settled about as much as it ever will. There's almost no sounds of expansion or contraction, either. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the Cottage is made of brick, rather than wood, and covered by siding...a feature added by a previous owner.
One of the "raise-up" leaves on the Duncan Phyfe dining room table does make a cracking sound sometimes - usually a single loud thwack once or twice a week, mostly in the morning. I chalk this sound up to wood expansion caused as the house warms up.
Little else except the hanging ceilings in my bedroom and in the kitchen make much noise. Those two ceilings are the unattractive "office type" ceilings that a previous owner had the misfortune to install. While I've restored the dressing room ceiling my bedroom and kitchen ceilings remain to be done. They do pop and crackle, a bit, particularly during and after a wind storm or after the furnace warms the room.
Sometimes late at night, I hear what sounds like a man and woman conversing in the dining room - formerly the front parlor (one of two parlors) that now serves as an entry hall-dining room. Other times, guitar music or the sound of a radio program playing is heard when I'm in the bathtub or lying in bed late at night. If I go into the dining room the sounds stop.
The dining room is the source of many strange sounds. One "raise up" leaf of the table shown in the photo is very noisy but that is likely due to wood expansion as it's nearest the front door, a source of seasonal heat or cold when opened.
On rare (around here) foggy mornings, only if I'm upstairs, I'll hear the sound of a train pulling into the old Elsinore train station. The train station was long ago demolished and train service to my rural town ended sometime in the 1970's. And, the train tracks were removed years ago. Eerie.
When I moved into the Cottage, in July of 2000, it was about 1:00 a.m. in the early, early, morning and I was soaking in the tub after a long, tiring day of moving in. As I soaked, I hear a loud chuckle come for the dressing room that adjoins the bathroom. That was startling and unsettling and I froze in terror. I was the only one living at the Cottage at that time. I've never heard it again in the nearly 11 years I've lived here. Perhaps the spirits were happy because I moved in?
I'm not scared to live here. Or, afraid of the unexplainable sounds. The Cottage is an old comforting, and comfortable home. It has an "embracing" atmosphere and people who visit always comment on how "quiet" and "peaceful" the Cottage feels. So, for me, those odd sounds, voices, or musical refrains that arise from time to time, are simply "echoes of the past".
In 2004 the attic was remodeled to include several living areas and the old knob and tube wiring replaced with modern electrical and wired for my office equipment. Odd things happened during that time, too. Sounds from above like someone moving about, especially at night. Shadows moving on the ceiling of my bedroom (this still happens if something bad is about to happen as if in forewarning). Things seen from the corner of my eye. Flashes and balls of light where there should be none. A large ball of spinning blue light in the center of the sitting room. And the photo below.
In the photo below a new hole was opened into the attic through a homemade closet added by a former owner. Part of the former office-style hanging ceiling is visible in the upper right hand corner. The ceiling has since been restored to its original 10-foot height with a salvaged pressed metal ceiling from the era the house was built. Note the strange mist under the newly opened hole in the ceiling.
