Rain was predicted but the first real snow (not just a simple smattering of icy rain) of Winter caught me by surprise. A morning phone call to my Mom, and a couple of hours spent with friends, and by 11:00 a.m. snow began to fall as we parted heading for our homes.
While the Cottage warmed from my absence, I settled by the fire in the parlor stove and sipped a first cup of tea that was just the welcome home I needed.
As an "ode" to the first real snow of the Season, I cancelled my afternoon tasks. The shopping could wait. The bills wouldn't get paid today (probably tomorrow), the lemons I was going to preserve would have to wait.
Instead, I curled up in the chair by the fire and ate brownies and sipped several cups of hot tea, then awhile thereafter savored a cup of steaming hot chocolate, and by 3:00 p.m. was ready for another restorative cup of tea. Ahhhh....
I curled up in my fireside chair. Karma Cat (now a house cat because of his asthma) occupied the middle of the sofa. My dog warmed her arthritic haunches in front of the fire. We spent a long, lazy afternoon. The pets sleeping, I reading.
An occasional glance out the windows assured me that the snow was indeed still falling, falling all day into the evening. Wonderful.
Whose wee footprints are imprinted in the snow to the right of the Circle Garden?
The apple trees and plum tree in the Orchard Garden still wear their leaves. The almond tree at the left of the photo has lost hers. The hoses looped over a fence post have yet to be stored in the block barn!
While we'll have a few more warmish days to finish readying the gardens for Winter, tomorrow night is predicted to get down to 12 degrees!
The chicken coop is readied for Winter with a layer of straw on the dirt floor and in the nest boxes. A heated bowl will keep the chickens' water ice free, while a lamp will warm them and keep them laying eggs into the dark, short days of Winter.
Clean, old dog beds have been placed near the coop for the barn cats to bed down where they'll find warmth from the coop's heat lamp. The kitties are fluffy with their long Winter coats.
We're almost ready for Winter! Today was our first taste of what's to come. Today we took a day off to relax and rest.
Giving oneself the gift of a day, even a few hours of leisure and rest, nourishes and restores us to better face tasks, responsibilities, and obligations.
This day was a gift I gave to myself and was nourished, thereby.
